Today is International Peace Day 2021

UN Association of Japan donated the Peace Bell in 1954. In honor of the International Day of Peace, the bell is rung twice a year: first on the first day of spring, celebrating the Vernal Equinox, and second, on 21 September to note the International Day of Peace.

Each year, on 21 September, is observed International Peace Day, also known as World Peace Day. The day is dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and peoples. On this day, people around the world observe 24 hours of nonviolence and cease-fire to promote peace.

On February 2021, Members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously voted to call for a "sustained humanitarian pause" over local conflicts.

What is the motive of celebrating Internal Peace Day?

"Recovering better for a more just and sustainable world" is this year's International Day of Peace theme. The day is celebrated with a motive to promote global solidarity in order to build a peaceful and sustainable world. The day celebration in 2021 is meant to how to help every human recover better, build resilience, and transform the world into a more just, inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and healthy place. International peace Day 2021 is celebrated to spread compassion, kindness, and hope in the face of the pandemic.

When was International Peace Day first celebrated?

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established the International Day of Peace on the third Tuesday in September in 1981, the opening day of the General Assembly's regular session. A year later, in 2001, the General Assembly declared 21 September as International Day of Peace.

What Internal Peace Day actually means?

In celebration of International Peace Day, non-violence and cease-fire are observed. This day contributes significantly to world peace. Moreover, the day is meant to promote green, climate-resilient economies that create jobs, reduce net emissions, and preserve forests.

International Peace Day and Covid-19

The year 2021 gave us a chance to rethink better possibilities to transform for good, build resilience, and make the world healthier. The year has helped global communities to recover from severe down crises and economic recession with the Covid-19 vaccine development and its distribution in different parts of the world.

When thinking what it means to have peace after covid-19 is to shape the future for the better? We see many regional conflicts, genocides and unjust oppressions coming to our minds, but we do not speak about them. The Security Council unanimously passed a resolution in February 2021 that called upon Member States to support a "sustained humanitarian pause" in local conflicts in response to the Secretary-General's appeal for a global ceasefire last March. But are these sufficient to provide support and protection to groups and people who need it? Are these deadly viral diseases a curse to humanity for talking about peace for all but not practicing it?
