World Rose Day 2021

World Rose Day is celebrated on September 22 each year to honor those who are battling  the fatal diseases.

About the Rose Day

There are many reasons why people celebrate World Rose Day every year on September 22nd, from bringing sheer joy to people's lives to reminding patients that they are not alone in their battle. Cancer patients who are battling the disease are commemorated on this special day. People with this disease are often emotionally exhausted since they need a lot of courage and positivity to stay strong. Fighting cancer can be a long and arduous fight. Besides the physiological consequences, cancer also causes psychological stress, anxiety, and anguish. In the face of emotional exhaustion, even those who support sufferers require courage and motivation to stay positive during difficult times. Therefore, this day is meant to bring joy and hope to these patients, and to remind them that they will win the fight against cancer if they remain determined and positive.

Is it celebrated in the memory of someone?

On this day, the world remembers twelve-year-old Melinda Rose who died of a rare type of blood cancer, Askin’s Tumor, at the age of twelve. The doctors told Melinda that she (Melinda) would only live for a few weeks after having been diagnosed with Askin’s tumor, but because of her undying spirit and hope, she surprisingly lived for six months. During her brief existence, Melinda spent her time talking to other cancer patients and sharing letters, verses, email, and poems with them. With her selfless care, she left a mark of kindness, and affection on the heart of the people around her.

How people celebrate World Rose Day?

After Melinda’s demise in 1996, as a mark of respect and love, people continue to follow her and send roses to cancer patients and caregivers as a way of letting them know of their love and support. Also, it's a testament to the hard journey they made. Often, people give thoughtful gifts and cards to patients. In addition, survivors and healthcare facilities organize special awareness campaigns.

Should we all celebrate this day?

Yes, of course. All religions teach to serve humanity and bringing laughter and smile on someone’s face who is fighting many battles inside is indeed a highest virtue.
