9th January - What’s the day Today?

Hydrogen Balloon Ascension Day

For the 20’s generation (Generation ‘Z’), hot air balloon flight seems an old dated history and you might be one. As you have been born in the age when human flights are no longer an absurd or impossible thing to imagine. You have been born in the age where there are helicopters, aero planes, jets, and even spaceships and today the flight is not only limited to the sky but it goes beyond the sky to galaxy.

9th January marks the day when the first human flight was ever recorded in the history.

How the Day became a History?

Coming back to where it all started. About hundreds of years ago, a man named Jean Paul Blanchard took the very first human flight in the first ever hydrogen-filled balloon. The calendar marks the year 1793 and the day was 9th of January. Jean Paul Blanchard was a French aeronaut and innovator who succeeded to take the first human flight in hot air balloon in the Walnut Street Prison in Philadelphia.

He then ascended to an altitude of approximately 200 fathoms during the course of the flight. During the entire time, he monitored his pulse to assure he was alive and experiencing it for real. He then finally came down gently in a field where a confused farmer glared him with his eyes wide open as it was something he could only saw in a dream. This was the first ever balloon flight to have taken place.

Why the day is remembered and is it celebrated?

As Jean Pierre Blanchard was the first human who reportedly took an air flight with a hydrogen-filled balloon, this day is remembered in his memory. It is celebrated as a National Balloon Ascension Day in United States of America not as a public holiday but as a day to embrace history.
