Chinese New Year

Feel the ground tremble under your feet on February 1? No need to worry! Because we have just entered the Chinese New Year!

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Day, the sky will light up with fireworks. Millions of people will exchange red envelopes filled with money as they exchange wishes for success during the Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival or Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year

The world celebrates new year every 1st Jan according to the Georgian calendar. For Chinese new year, 4720 falls on February 1, this year. Chinese celebrate New Year shortly after the winter solstice, usually between January 21 and February 20 on the Gregorian calendar.

History

Chinese New Year is thought to have evolved from the Shang Dynasty of the 14th century B.C. Emperor Wu of Han (140–87 B.C.) is credited with starting the tradition of performing rituals on the first day of the Chinese calendar year.

Story Behind Chinese New Year

Legends surround the origins of Chinese New Year. It is said that a monster named Nian ("Year") used to attack villagers at the beginning of every new year. It was found out that the monster was afraid of loud noises, bright lights, and the color red, so these things were used to frighten it away.

Chinese Calender and Animals as Zodiac

Twelve different animals are associated with the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac calendar, also known as the Chinese zodiac signs.

Year of Tiger

We will leave the Year of the Ox on February 1, 2022, and enter the Year of the Tiger. On this day in the Chinese calendar, the Year of the Tiger begins. In the year ahead, it is said that children are going to be courageous, fiercely competitive, and resilient.

Chinese Beliefs associated with the day

In China, Lunar New Year is the time for Spring Festival or Chūnjié. Chinese culture traditionally regarded the holiday as a time to feast and to pay homage to household deities and ancestors. Traditionally, the New Year begins with the first new moon, which occurs at the end of January and continues through the first 15 days of the first lunar month.

Why it is Celebrated?

The celebration of festivals is a traditional way of honouring ancestors and deities.

How it is Celebrated?

The holiday is celebrated with good food, red envelopes, and blessings. The holiday signifies prosperity, abundance, and good fortune.

A thorough cleaning is done before the Lunar New Year in order to remove any inauspicious spirits that might have collected in the old year. Cleansing is also intended to create room for good luck and good will.

Families may hold rituals to ensure good health and fortune, such as posting red papers and banners enscribed with calligraphy. Children receive envelopes containing money from their elders. As a traditional symbol of togetherness, glutinous rice is frequently eaten.

How Long is Chinese New Year?

16 Days

Holiday celebrations last as long as 16 days, but are only celebrated on the first seven days (January 31st–February 6th, 2022).

Cultural Revolution

Under Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong, the government restricted the celebration of the traditional Chinese New Year and adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1949.

In the late 20th century, however, Chinese leaders were more willing to accept the tradition. Chinese officials established a weeklong holiday during the holiday in 1996, giving families the opportunity to celebrate the new year and travel home. This week of relaxation became known as the Spring Festival.

How the celebrations continue for first week of the Chinese New Year?

The Chinese calendar dates the beginning of the celebrations as the first day of the first lunar month and continuing until the 15th of the month. Events continue until the next full moon occurs. Since the dates of celebration follow the phases of the moon, the holiday is sometimes referred to as Lunar New Year.

Chinese New Year concludes with the Lantern Festival, during which people display lanterns in temples or carry them during a parade at night. A dragon dance is the highlight of many festival celebrations in many parts of China since the dragon is the symbol of good fortune. During this procession, a colourful dragon is carried through the streets as the highlight of the celebrations.
