Her one of a kind, unique voice has given soul to many songs written by music writers. She has given Bollywood music and film industry with hundreds of hit songs that is still popular and trending today. 

Lata Mangeshkar was a heart throb of the Bollywood music and film industry. Certainly, the death of this iconic singer is a big loss for the Bollywood industry.

Early Years of her life


Lata Mangeshkar was born in the central Indian city of Indore on 28 September 1929. Being born to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar, she inherited music from her family. As a singer, actor, and producer of marathi-language musical plays, her father had a successful career.

Having been born in 1929, Lata Mangeshkar was raised in a family who valued music. Lata Mangeshkar spoke in one of her interviews of her family's deep appreciation of classical music and film music.

Among her five siblings, she was the eldest and one of the best known singers in India; her siblings followed her footsteps and also became well-known singers.


When she was asked when she actually started learning to sing she said " I was only five years old when I started learning music from my father."

Education

Lata Mangeshkar received education at home. In one of her interviews she told that she learned Marathi from a home tutor, and a local priest taught her Sanskrit, while she gained basic knowledge of other subjects from her nearest relatives and home tutors. When she was asked when she actually started learning to sing she said " I was only five years old when I started learning music from my father."


Early life Struggles

She saw life struggles after the death of her father. She lost her father at the age of 13 and she ultimately got the whole responsibility on her shoulder at a young age as she was the eldest of her siblings. Times became difficult when her father lost his money and was forced to shut down his film and his theatre company. The family moved to the western city of Pune after the family home in Sangli in Maharashtra state was auctioned. After the death of her father, the family moved to Mumbai.

Career in Bollywood Industry

Lata Mangeshkar stepped into the film industry as an actress when she was too young. Since there wasn't enough singing in films in the early 1940s, young Lata turned to acting to earn a living. She made her debut in the film industry from a Marathi film Gajabhau which was released in the year 1943, before indopak separation. Her first song as a playback singer was  “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu”.


She soon gain acknowledgement in the film industry by 1947, but young Lata Mangeshkar was not happy with her work and role in life. In one of her interviews with Nasreen Munni Kabir she said "I never liked it - the make-up, the lights. People ordering you about, say this dialogue, say that dialogue, I felt so uncomfortable".

Music Career

Later after Indopak separation, her fortunes took a turn for the better. Lata Mangeshkar sang her first full song in the film Mahal in 1949 and was immediately noticed because of her unique melodious voice.


Bollywood was just entering its golden age, and Mangeshkar was in the right place at the right time. Over the next four decades, she sang memorable and popular songs in such films as Pakeezah, Majboor, Awaara, Mughal e Zam, Shree 420, Aradhana and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, a rom-com which ran for a record-breaking 20 years. Lata Mangeshkar rose to fame at the dawn of Bollywood's golden age as a "playback singer", providing the singing voice to Bollywood's lip-synching movie stars.


She sang for every female star, from Madhu Bala in the 1940s to Kajol in the 1990s, and alongside top male singers, including Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar. 


She also worked with every leading Bollywood director, from Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt to Mani Ratnam and Karan Johar.

Lata Mangheskar's last recorded song in Hindi, Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki, was released on March 30, 2019 as a tribute to the Indian Army and nation.

In 1974, Lata Mangheskar was the first Indian to perform at the Royal Albert Hall. In 1987 the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was bestowed on her by the Government of India. She was nominated to the upper house of India's parliament in 1999 that she refused as she was happy with her singing. She received India's highest honour for civilians, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001. France conferred on her its highest civilian award, Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, in 2007. She was the recipient of three National Film Awards, 15 Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, two Filmfare Special Awards, and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

During her last days

Earlier in January, she tested positive for Covid-19 and was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai. It was 8 January 2022, when she got admitted to Breach Candy Hospital's intensive care unit in Mumbai. Her health showed only marginal improvements as she remained in the ICU. Following a modest improvement in her health, doctors took her off the ventilator on 28 January. However, her condition worsened on 5 February, and she was put back on a ventilator.

It is difficult to accept the fact that Lata Mangeshkar, one of India's most loved and venerated singers is no more with us. May her soul rest in peace.
